  • SMS Text Messaging....Frequently Asked Questions:

    What is SMS?

SMS stands for Short Message Service, and is a method of communicating with mobile devices using text messages.

Are all cell phones capable of receiving SMS messages?

SMS messages can be received by most cell phones in the marketplace purchased after late 2001. All current cell phones available are capable of receiving SMS messages and new phones are now offering advanced messaging capabilities such as MMS (multimedia messaging).

How long can a SMS message be?

SMS messages can be up to 160 characters in length. We recommend maintaining your messages between 100-140 characters.

Are recipients of SMS billed by their wireless carrier?

Most all wireless carriers offer SMS pricing packages to their subscribers. AT&T Wireless is the first carrier to allow incoming SMS messages free to the user and many wireless carriers will follow suit.

How do recipients know if they received an SMS message?

Their cell phone may beep or make a specific sound when an SMS message is received. The recipient then simply checks their inbox to read the message.

How can people unsubscribe from SMS services?

As an ethical opt-in policy, recipients should always be able to unsubscribe from a SMS service. Some ways to manage this is by sending an unsubscribe reply from their cell phone when they receive a SMS message, or by going to a website to unsubscribe.

Can a recipient of a SMS message send a reply on their cell phone?

If the user has two-way messaging capabilities, as well as the delivery system of the SMS message, a recipient of a SMS message can send a reply on their cell phone in the form of a SMS message. The recipient can also reply to a message by voice if the message contains a phone number.
